Food Friday: National Doughnut Day 2017
Mmmmm doughnuts
---Homer Simpson
Happy National Doughnut Day! You may be saying to yourself, "oh, sure there's a day for everything." But this day actually has a history that you may be interested in.
National Doughnut Day is the first Friday in June and started in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army workers who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I and to help those in need due to the Depression.
Salvation Army women were on the front lines in France baking/serving donuts and coffee as well as assisting soldiers. Their tireless work helped lift the morale of the soldiers and made an important contribution on the front lines.
Fast forward to today's observance of National Doughnut Day. Yes, there are some places giving away free doughnuts but in case you want to make your own, the following recipes from 1925s Royal Cook Book might help.
